Spirit Island is a cooperative board game about defending your island from colonizing invaders. The game allows each player to control different spirits of the land, each with unique elemental powers. Players simultaneously choose which power cards to play each turn, which cost energy. By combining power cards that match a spirit's elemental affinities, players can gain bonus abilities. Fast powers are executed immediately before the invaders can spread, while other magic requires more planning. During the spirit phase, spirits gain energy and decide how to grow, either by reclaiming used power cards, seeking new power, or spreading their presence to new areas of the island. The invaders expand on the map in a somewhat predictable pattern. Each turn they explore different parts of the island, build settlements and cities, and cause blight when they attack native inhabitants. The spirits fight back against the invaders and protect the island. The complexity of the game increases over time and offers varying difficulty levels, with a range of different opponents to combat.
